Each of the three wells serving Scott Point has a water treatment plant to provide disinfection and to deal with elements contained in the well water that exceed the levels specified into the provincial Drinking Water Protection Act and the Drinking Water Protection Regulation. After treatment, all potable water quality meets the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality (“CGDWQ”).
Well 1 (Water Tower or Old Salty) Raw well water contains seawater from intrusion and elevated levels of manganese and iron. Treatment at Well 1 water treatment plant consists of injecting well water with oxidant (currently offline) followed by Filox adsorption and 5 micron cartridge filtration before flowing to the Blend tank. Flow from the Blend tank is injected with anti-scalent and feeds the Reverse Osmosis plant which consists of eight 4” diameter ESPA-2 membranes in four chambers. Permeate is then injected with hypochlorite and directed to the Transfer tank. Concentrate waste is directed to the ocean. Backwash and flush of the Filox filter and RO membrane chambers uses potable water controlled by the backwash control valve and is directed to a disposal field.
Well 3 (Welbury) Raw well water contains sediment as well as levels of manganese and iron that can exceed the AO. Treatment at Well 3 water treatment plant consists of well water produced through a 20 micron cartridge filter and then hypochlorite (oxidation) injection before flowing to the Contact tank. The Contact tank feeds the transfer pump which pushes water through a sand filter and Filox adsorption and into the water main. Backwash of the two filters uses well water from the Contact tank and is directed a disposal ditch.
Well 4 (RVYC) Raw well water contains elevated levels of manganese and iron and organic carbon that is a pre-cursor for disinfectant by-products. Treatment at Well 4 water treatment plant consists of well water produced through a sand filter and ion-exchange tannin filter, followed by oxidation injection, Filox adsorption, 5 micron cartridge filtration and into the Contact tank. The Contact tank is pumped to Well 1 where water can be directed to either the Blend tank or Transfer tank after hypochlorite injection. Backwash of the 3 filters uses potable water controlled by the backwash control valve and is directed to a disposal ditch.
